The most important element your new nursery should offer is a comfortable, quiet, and dark sleeping environment.  Your new arrival will sleep at odd hours (and won’t sleep during sleeping hours!), and mostly during the day, so you’ll want to be able to block out sunlight from your baby’s room.  Black out curtains are perfect for this purpose.

They’re available in a wide variety of styles, patterns, and colors, but all have one thing in common:  a thick, light-fast fabric backing that lets very little sunlight through the window and into the room.  A set of black out curtains should top your list of nursery preparation items.

A changing table is also a must-have addition for your new nursery, and it will make those midnight diaper changing episodes go much more smoothly.  A changing table combines easy storage of common diaper-changing items along with a safe place to lay your baby while you do the cleaning.

Even though your new arrival won’t be playing with toys for a few weeks, that won’t stop your friends and family from showering him or her with the latest toys and teething devices.  You’ll be amazed at how quickly your nursery floor and closet become cluttered with baby toys, stuffed animals, bedtime books, clothes, and the like.  Storage cubes are a mandatory addition to your baby’s closet (or other nursery storage area as well, for that matter), and provide a quick way to clean up the room after your toddler learns how to make a mess.
