Gingham Curtains 150x150 Gingham Curtains Bring Nostalgia to the KitchenIn the 1950s and well into the ’60s, red gingham curtains were all the rage as a choice for kitchen curtains. For baby boomers, the sight of red gingham curtains brings back memories of hot apple pie, mom in an apron and laminate table tops. Red gingham has a way of doing evoking all sorts of memories.

Gingham is pattern on fabric, generally a cotton fiber, with a design made of checkerboard squares. Red gingham was patterned with red and white squares.

But there were a variety of color choices for gingham that included pink, amber, blue, green and yellow, usually with white as the contrasting color. Red and white gingham has long been a favorite, used in dresses, linens and especially kitchen curtains.

With retro decor in full swing, red gingham curtains are back, but with a sleeker style geared to work in contemporary decor. Tabs at the top of the curtain panels have replaced those gathered ruffles from the past. But they could be embellished with big white buttons on the tabs to finish off the design. What hasn’t changed, however, is the coordination of other decorative and functional pieces in the kitchen. Everything from clocks to canisters and appliances are red. Collectors search out vintage items for the kitchen that have that same red shade to match the red gingham curtains.

Red gingham curtains are often hung on curtain rods elsewhere in the house for a pretty old-fashioned country look, because red gingham is a very old design, often used by the pioneering women of old west. Country decorators bring crisp ruffled red gingham curtains into the nursery, master bedroom, and bathrooms to get that homespun affect. It’s an easy choice for country style decorating.

Red gingham curtains can be found ready-made or they can be custom-made. Most fabric shops have a ready supply of yardage for red-gingham. If red isn’t your color, why not try pink or blue gingham curtains.
